Digital Directors ANZ

Advocacy

A unified voice for digital governance excellence

Why we advocate?

The average director is a 61 year old, white, male, accountant.

Women On Boards was founded in 2006, when female representation on boards was less than 6% across Australia and New Zealand.

Today, women hold 54.3% of all Government board positions in Australia and 52.1% in New Zealand. There isn’t a single ASX300 board without female representation and 33% of all board roles nationally are held by women.

In that same period, culturally diverse representation has doubled.

Digital Directors joins these advocacy groups in addressing the final entrenched orthodoxy of directorship - diversity of experience.

In contrast to the progress made in other areas, the number of directors with a technology background has drifted from 7.1% to just 7.7% over the past 5 years.

At this pace, we are on track to have a single technology expert in every board room around 2055.

We just can’t wait that long.

How we advocate

Three interconnected pillars driving meaningful change in digital governance.

Stand up

Stand up

We are building a motivated membership, with a foundational belief in the importance of the change we are making.
We provide ways to connect, collaborate and welcome like-minded peers into a community which grows the power and reach of our message.

Turn up

Turn up

We coordinate action at the moments that matter.
We turn up together at the industry forums. We support members seeking election to positions of influence. We make submissions to the governing bodies that need to hear from us.
We make our presence felt in the spaces where we have previously been absent.

Speak up

Speak up

We raise our voices regularly, clearly and in unison.
We exploit the unfair advantage of our digital expertise, to scale and amplify our message.
We reach out across the channels which find and influence the stakeholders who will make a difference.

Challenge the orthodoxy

Challenge the orthodoxy

Some decision-makers are stuck with the old stereotypes - “IT people” are single-skilled, bad at communication, don’t think at a governance level, always get stuck in solution mode. We make the digital director community personal - combating these misconceptions by sharing our stories, our insights, our experiences, our wisdom, how we think differently and why it is so valuable to boards and governing bodies.

Highlight the risks

Highlight the risks

The lack of digital capability in boardrooms presents an ever-increasing risk to organisations large and small. We echo the voice of regulators, who are putting the profession on notice and calling for greater digital competence. We make boards uncomfortable about the growing possibility that they will be next - and that questions will be asked about why they didn’t act sooner.
